Planes launch and land aboard the “supercarrier” USS Nimitz (CVN-68). Supercarriers are the largest warships ever built, typically displacing more than 70,000 tons. The Nimitz is 1,092 feet in length (over 3 football fields long), and displaces more than 100,000 tons. The U.S. Navy has 10 supercarriers that displace more than 100,000 tons as of 2014 – all nuclear powered.
