Electromagnetic Railgun Test Shot – U.S. Navy Prototype

A test shot of the U.S. Navy’s electromagnetic railgun, a long-range weapon that fires projectiles using electromagnetic energy instead of chemical propellants.

Mounted on U.S. Navy vessels, the EM railgun will be capable of firing a projectile at more than Mach 5, and up to 110 nautical miles. The hypersonic projectile will destroy targets with kinetic energy instead of conventional explosives.

Technicians successfully fired the EM railgun prototype, developed by BAE Systems, at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA.
